thetrainline.com helps hard up brits through credit crunch.

Although the cost of living reached its highest level since 1992 last week, Brits need not be stuck at home. TheTrainline, the UK's leading rail retailer, offers money-saving tickets on its website www.thetrainline.com.

With advance purchase tickets available on most long distance journeys until 6pm the day before travel, customers can make considerable cost savings on rail trips to destinations including Manchester, Edinburgh and London simply by booking in advance with TheTrainline.

For example, by booking today for travel tomorrow between London and Norwich, rail travellers can save £28 - a standard advance single is available from TheTrainline until 6pm this evening for £12, rather than the standard saver single fare for tickets purchased on the day of travel at the station of £40.

Similarly, by booking today for travel tomorrow between London and Manchester, rail travellers can save £35.40 - a standard advance single is available from TheTrainline until 6pm this evening for £26, rather than the standard saver single fare for tickets purchased on the day of travel at the station of £61.40.

With these savings, there's no reason why Brits can't carry on getting out and about. Ben Pearson, commercial director at TheTrainline explains: "Rising fuel prices and the credit crunch may be squeezing our pockets but, on every day activities like travel there are still ways to save money. And with savings available online up to 6pm on the day before travel, you don't have to plan months or weeks in advance to take advantage of great deals."

Advanced tickets are available on www.thetrainline.com up to 12 weeks before travel and until 6pm the day before departure.

Other money-saving train travel tips from TheTrainline include:

Buy single tickets - Two single tickets are often cheaper than a return.
Travel off peak - Some of the best fares can be found if you avoid the busy times, i.e. weekdays after 10am and not between 5pm and 7pm.
Specify return dates - Open return fares are more expensive so try and specify a return date and time if possible.
Rail cards - Railcards offer value for money if you travel by train, saving you 1/3 off most standard rail tickets.

* Published fares are subject to availability and correct at time of going to press on 24 June 2008, for travel on 25 June 2008
